Kâlî

Kâlî (or Kali) is a prominent Hindu goddess, one of the ten Mahavidyas, or great wisdom goddesses. She is the fierce and powerful aspect of the goddess Parvati, the consort of Shiva. Her name is derived from the Sanskrit word 'kāla', meaning 'black, time, death'. She is often depicted with a dark complexion, a necklace of skulls, and a tongue lolling out, symbolizing her role as the destroyer of evil forces and the ultimate reality that transcends time.

Her worship is widespread in India, particularly in Bengal, where she is revered as the Mother Goddess. While her imagery can be fearsome, she is also seen as a benevolent protector of her devotees, granting liberation and spiritual knowledge.
