Kwintylian / Quintilian / Quintilianus

Kwintylian is a Polish form of the Roman cognomen Quintilianus, which itself is derived from the Latin praenomen Quintus. Quintus literally means 'fifth' and was traditionally given to the fifth-born child in a family, or sometimes to a child born in the fifth month. The suffix '-ianus' indicates 'belonging to' or 'descendant of', so Quintilianus would mean 'belonging to Quintus' or 'descendant of Quintus'.

The name gained prominence through the Roman rhetorician Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (c. 35 – c. 100 AD), known for his comprehensive work on rhetoric, 'Institutio Oratoria'. His influence ensured the name's recognition throughout the Roman Empire and subsequently in areas influenced by Latin culture, including Poland. The Polish spelling 'Kwintylian' reflects the phonetic adaptation of the Latin name into the Polish language.
