Krishna

Krishna is one of the most widely revered and popular Hindu deities, worshipped as the Supreme Being or as the eighth incarnation (avatar) of the god Vishnu. The name 'Krishna' is derived from the Sanskrit adjective 'kṛṣṇa', which primarily means 'dark' or 'black'. This refers to his dark skin complexion, as depicted in iconography. However, it also has a deeper spiritual meaning, often interpreted as 'all-attractive' or 'the all-attractive one', signifying his divine charm and ability to draw all beings to him.

The worship of Krishna dates back to ancient times, with early texts like the Rigveda mentioning the term 'Krishna' in various contexts. His life story is extensively detailed in the Mahabharata, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Harivamsa, which describe his childhood as a cowherd, his youth as a lover, and his role as a warrior and divine teacher. The Bhagavad Gita, a part of the Mahabharata, features Krishna as the charioteer and philosophical guide to Arjuna, making it one of the most important scriptures in Hinduism.
