The name Keena has a somewhat complex and debated origin. It is often presented as an Americanized spelling of Irish names. One prominent theory links it to the Irish surname Mac Cionaodha, meaning "son of Cionaodh." Cionaodh itself is an ancient Gaelic name meaning "born of fire" or "ancient and fiery."

Another possible origin is as a variant of the Irish name Caoimhe (pronounced KEE-va or KWEE-va), meaning "gentle, beautiful, precious."
