Kangaw

The name Kangaw is directly derived from the Guugu Yimithirr word 'gangurru', which refers to the grey kangaroo. Captain James Cook and his crew encountered the Guugu Yimithirr people in 1770 during their exploration of the Endeavour River in what is now Queensland, Australia. The word 'gangurru' was recorded by Cook's botanist, Joseph Banks, and subsequently entered the English language as 'kangaroo'.

While 'kangaroo' became the common English term for the animal, 'Kangaw' as a personal name is a more direct and less anglicized form, retaining a closer phonetic resemblance to the original Indigenous word. Its use as a given name is rare and typically signifies a connection to Aboriginal Australian heritage, culture, or the iconic animal itself.
