Kâli

Kâli is a prominent Hindu goddess, one of the ten Mahavidyas, or great wisdom goddesses. Her name is derived from the Sanskrit word 'kāla', meaning 'time' or 'black'. She is often depicted as a dark-skinned, fierce figure with multiple arms, holding a sword and a severed head, symbolizing her power over time and her role as the destroyer of evil forces. Despite her fearsome appearance, she is also revered as a benevolent mother goddess who grants liberation to her devotees.

The worship of Kâli dates back to ancient India, with her earliest mentions found in the Puranas and Tantric texts. She is particularly associated with the Tantric tradition and is a central figure in various Shakta sects, where she is seen as the ultimate reality or Brahman. Her iconography and rituals are rich with symbolism, representing the cyclical nature of creation and destruction, and the ultimate triumph of good over evil.
