Jarbas

The name Jarbas is primarily known in Portuguese-speaking countries, particularly Brazil. Its origin is somewhat debated, but the most widely accepted theory traces it back to the ancient Persian name 'Jarba' or 'Gerba', which is thought to mean 'fire' or 'burning'. It is also sometimes linked to the mythological figure Iarbas, a king of Gaetulia in North Africa, who was a suitor of Dido, the queen of Carthage, in Virgil's Aeneid. However, the direct linguistic connection between the Persian root and the Latinized Iarbas is not definitively established. In Brazil, it gained some popularity in the early to mid-20th century.

While its usage is not widespread globally, Jarbas holds a distinct place in Brazilian naming traditions. The association with 'fire' can evoke qualities of passion, energy, and intensity. Its relatively uncommon nature gives it a unique and somewhat exotic feel within Portuguese-speaking cultures.
