The name Jamaica originates from the Arawakan (Taino) word 'Xaymaca,' which means 'land of wood and water' or 'land of springs.' The Taino people were the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean islands, including Jamaica, before the arrival of Europeans. Christopher Columbus first encountered the island in 1494 and named it Santiago, but the original Taino name persisted and evolved into Jamaica.
