Hyacinthus

Hyacinthus is a name of Ancient Greek origin, derived directly from the Greek word 'Hyakinthos' (Ὑάκινθος). In Greek mythology, Hyacinthus was a beautiful Spartan prince beloved by both the god Apollo and the West Wind god Zephyrus. He was accidentally killed by Apollo during a discus-throwing game, and from his spilled blood, the hyacinth flower is said to have sprung. This myth is a classic example of an etiological myth, explaining the origin of the flower.
