Huỳnh is a common Vietnamese surname, a variant of the Chinese surname Huang (黃). The adoption of 'Huỳnh' over 'Hoàng' by some families in Vietnam is often attributed to a historical taboo. During the Nguyễn Dynasty, the character 'Hoàng' was part of the given name of Emperor Thiệu Trị (Nguyễn Phúc Miên Tông), and out of respect, many families whose surname was Hoàng changed it to Huỳnh to avoid using the emperor's name. This practice of avoiding the emperor's given name is a long-standing tradition in Vietnamese culture, known as 'tên húy'.
