Hekate

Hekate (or Hecate) is a prominent figure in ancient Greek religion and mythology. She is often depicted as a chthonic (underworld) goddess associated with crossroads, entrance-ways, night, light, magic, witchcraft, knowledge of herbs and poisonous plants, ghosts, and necromancy. Her origins are debated, with some scholars suggesting pre-Greek or Anatolian roots, while others see her as an indigenous Greek deity. She is one of the oldest deities mentioned in Hesiod's 'Theogony', where she is described as a powerful and respected goddess, honored by Zeus himself.

Her cult was widespread, particularly in Thessaly and at the crossroads where offerings were left to her. Over time, her image evolved, and she became more strongly associated with the darker aspects of magic and the underworld, often depicted with three heads or three bodies, symbolizing her dominion over the past, present, and future, or her presence at crossroads. Despite her fearsome reputation, she was also seen as a protective deity, especially for households and children, and a guide for sailors and hunters.
