Phryne was a famous ancient Greek hetaira (courtesan) of the 4th century BC, renowned for her beauty. Her real name was Mnesarete, but she was called Phryne (meaning 'toad' in Greek) due to her yellowish complexion. Despite the unusual nickname, she was considered one of the most beautiful women of her time and served as a model for many artists, including the sculptor Praxiteles, who was also her lover. She is famously associated with the legend of her trial for impiety, where her lawyer, Hypereides, allegedly bared her breasts to the judges to sway their decision by appealing to her divine beauty.

The name itself, despite its literal meaning, became associated with exceptional beauty and allure due to the fame of the historical figure.
