Fermí / Firmin / Firmino / Fermín

Fermí is the Catalan form of the Latin name Firminus. The name Firminus itself is derived from the Latin word 'firmus', meaning 'firm, steadfast, strong'. It was a relatively common name in the Roman Empire and was borne by several early Christian saints, which helped to spread its use throughout Europe. The most famous of these is Saint Firmin of Amiens, a 3rd-century bishop and martyr.

Over centuries, as Latin evolved into various Romance languages, Firminus adapted to local phonetics. In the Catalan-speaking regions, it became Fermí. The name has maintained a consistent, though not overwhelmingly popular, presence in Catalonia and other Catalan-speaking areas, often associated with the patron saint of Pamplona, San Fermín, whose feast day is celebrated with the running of the bulls.
