Ensi

Ensi was a title used in ancient Sumer (Mesopotamia) for the ruler or governor of a city-state. The term literally translates to 'lord of the plowland' or 'lord of the foundation', indicating a role deeply connected to the agricultural and foundational aspects of the city. Initially, the ensi held both religious and secular authority, acting as the chief priest and administrator. Over time, particularly during the Early Dynastic period, the role evolved, sometimes becoming subordinate to a 'lugal' (king) but still retaining significant local power and religious duties.
