History & Etymology
Egeo is the Italian and Spanish form of the ancient Greek name Aegeus (Αἰγεύς). In Greek mythology, Aegeus was a legendary king of Athens, and the father of the hero Theseus. The name is believed to be derived from the Greek word 'aix' (αἴξ), meaning 'goat', or 'aigis' (αἰγίς), referring to the 'aegis' or shield of Zeus or Athena. The association with the Aegean Sea is also prominent, as Aegeus is said to have given his name to the sea when he tragically drowned himself in it, believing his son Theseus had perished.
