Dymfna

The name Dymphna is of Irish origin, derived from the Old Irish word 'damh' (pronounced 'dav'), meaning 'stag' or 'ox', with the diminutive suffix '-nat'. Over time, the meaning evolved to 'fawn' or 'hind'. It is most famously associated with Saint Dymphna, a 7th-century Irish virgin martyr. According to legend, she was the daughter of a pagan Irish king and a Christian mother. After her mother's death, her father, suffering from mental illness, developed an incestuous desire for Dymphna due to her resemblance to his late wife. She fled to Belgium with her confessor, Saint Gerebernus, but was eventually found and martyred by her father.

Saint Dymphna became the patron saint of those suffering from mental and nervous disorders, runaways, and victims of incest. Her cult grew significantly, particularly in Geel, Belgium, where her relics are venerated. The name, while distinctly Irish in origin, gained international recognition through her veneration, though it remains relatively uncommon outside of specific religious contexts or Irish diaspora communities.
