Dismas

Dismas is a name with a unique and somber history, primarily known through Christian tradition. It is not found in the canonical Gospels of the New Testament, but rather in the apocryphal Gospel of Nicodemus (also known as the Acts of Pilate), which dates to the 4th century. In this text, Dismas is identified as the 'good thief' or 'penitent thief' who was crucified alongside Jesus Christ and repented before his death. His name is said to be derived from the Greek word 'dysmē' (δυσμή), meaning 'sunset' or 'death', which is fitting given his role in the crucifixion narrative.

The name Dismas gained a degree of veneration within certain Christian denominations, particularly in Eastern Orthodoxy and Catholicism, where he is sometimes referred to as Saint Dismas. He is considered the patron saint of prisoners, condemned criminals, and undertakers.
