Dionisiy is the Russian and Ukrainian form of the ancient Greek name Dionysios. Dionysios itself is derived from Dionysos, the Greek god of wine, revelry, fertility, and theater. The name was popular in ancient Greece and Rome, often given to those dedicated to the god or born during festivals honoring him.

With the spread of Christianity, many pagan names were either abandoned or reinterpreted. However, Dionysios, and its various forms, persisted due to the veneration of several early Christian saints named Dionysius, most notably Saint Dionysius the Areopagite, a disciple of Saint Paul, and Saint Dionysius, Pope of Rome. This helped to cement its place in Christian naming traditions, particularly in Eastern Orthodox countries where it evolved into forms like Dionisiy.
