Darío is the Spanish and Portuguese form of the ancient Persian name Darius. The name originates from the Old Persian word 'Dārayavauš', which is composed of 'dāraya' meaning 'to possess, to hold' and 'vauš' meaning 'good'. This etymology gives the name the meaning 'possessor of good' or 'he who holds firm the good', often interpreted as 'wealthy' or 'kingly'.

The name gained significant historical prominence through the Achaemenid Persian kings, most notably Darius I the Great, who ruled a vast empire from 522 to 486 BC.
