Darijus

Darijus is a Lithuanian form of the ancient Persian name Darius. The original Persian name, Dārayavauš, is composed of elements meaning 'to possess' and 'goodness', thus translating to 'possessing goodness' or 'upholder of good'. The name was famously borne by several kings of the Achaemenid Empire, most notably Darius I the Great, who ruled from 522 to 486 BC. His reign marked a peak of the Persian Empire, known for its vast territorial expansion and administrative innovations.

The name entered European languages through Greek (Dareios) and Latin (Darius). In Lithuania, it became Darijus, reflecting local phonetic adaptations. While it has ancient roots, its usage in Lithuania is more contemporary, gaining popularity in the 20th century, particularly after the restoration of Lithuanian independence.
