It is the feminine form of the name Damjan, which itself is derived from the Greek name Damianos (Δαμιανός). The Greek root 'damazo' (δαμάζω) means 'to tame' or 'to subdue'. The name gained popularity through Saint Damian, a physician who, along with his twin brother Saint Cosmas, was martyred during the Diocletianic Persecution in the 3rd century.
