Dagon

Dagon is an ancient Semitic deity, primarily worshipped by the Philistines and in various parts of the Near East, including Mesopotamia, Ugarit, and Canaan. The etymology of the name is debated among scholars. One prominent theory connects it to the Semitic root *dgn, meaning 'grain' or 'corn,' suggesting Dagon was a god of agriculture and fertility. This interpretation aligns with depictions of Dagon as a human figure holding a sheaf of wheat.

Another significant theory, particularly popular due to biblical accounts, links Dagon to the Hebrew word *dag*, meaning 'fish.' This interpretation has led to the popular image of Dagon as a merman or fish-god, often depicted with the upper body of a man and the lower body of a fish. While archaeological evidence for a fish-god depiction is less conclusive than for the grain deity, the biblical narrative in the Book of Judges and 1 Samuel strongly associates Dagon with the Philistines and describes his idol falling before the Ark of the Covenant, with its head and hands broken off, leaving only the 'fishy part' (though this is a later interpretation of the text).
