Cunera is a name of Germanic origin, derived from the elements *kunja- (meaning 'kin, family, race') and *rad- (meaning 'counsel'). Over time, the 'kin' element evolved to be associated with 'brave' or 'bold' in some interpretations, leading to the meaning 'brave counsel'. The name gained some prominence due to Saint Cunera, a legendary virgin martyr associated with the city of Rhenen in the Netherlands.

Saint Cunera's legend, though not historically verifiable, tells of her being one of the companions of Saint Ursula, martyred by the Huns. Her relics were said to have been brought to Rhenen, where a church was dedicated to her. This association with a saint helped to establish the name in certain regions, particularly in the Low Countries, during the medieval period.
