Cossette is a French diminutive, derived from the Old French word 'cosse', meaning 'pod' or 'husk'. It was historically used as a term of endearment, akin to 'little one' or 'sweet pea'. The name gained significant recognition and usage after Victor Hugo's novel 'Les Misérables' (1862), where it is the nickname of the character Fantine's daughter, Euphrasie. Hugo chose the name to emphasize her small, delicate, and often overlooked nature, like a 'little thing' or 'little pod'.

Before 'Les Misérables', Cossette was not widely used as a given name.
