Clelia is a name of ancient Roman origin, derived from the Roman gens (clan) name Cloelia. The root of Cloelia is believed to be the Latin word 'cluere', meaning 'to hear' or 'to be famous', or 'clavis' meaning 'key', or 'claudere' meaning 'to close'. The most famous bearer of this name was Cloelia, a legendary Roman heroine from the 6th century BC. According to Livy, she was one of the hostages given to Lars Porsena, the Etruscan king, during the war between Rome and Clusium. She famously escaped her captors by swimming across the Tiber River and led other Roman virgin hostages to safety. For her bravery, she was honored with an equestrian statue on the Via Sacra.
