Cida / Aparecida

Cida is primarily used as a diminutive of the Portuguese name Aparecida. The name Aparecida itself is derived from the title of the Virgin Mary, Nossa Senhora da Conceição Aparecida (Our Lady of the Appeared Conception), referring to a statue of the Virgin Mary found by fishermen in the Paraíba River in Brazil in 1717. The discovery of the statue, which 'appeared' in their nets, led to the veneration of Our Lady of Aparecida as the patron saint of Brazil. Cida, as a short form, carries this religious and cultural significance.
