Chhaya

Chhaya is a name deeply rooted in Hindu mythology. In Sanskrit, 'Chhaya' literally means 'shadow' or 'shade.' She is a prominent figure in the Surya Purana, where she is described as the wife of Surya, the Hindu sun god. According to the legend, Surya's first wife, Saranyu (also known as Sanjna), found his radiance too intense and created Chhaya as her shadow-self to take her place while she went to perform penance. Chhaya bore Surya several children, including the planet Shani (Saturn) and the river goddess Tapti.
