Cadfael

Cadfael is a Welsh name derived from the Old Welsh elements 'cad' meaning 'battle' and 'mael' meaning 'chief' or 'prince'. While it has ancient roots, it was largely obscure until the 20th century. Its most significant resurgence came through the popular 'Brother Cadfael' mystery novels by Ellis Peters (Edith Pargeter), which began in 1977 and were set in 12th-century Shrewsbury Abbey. The character of Brother Cadfael, a Welsh Benedictine monk and former crusader, brought considerable attention to the name.

Before the novels, the name was very rare, primarily found in historical records or as a surname. The fictional character's popularity cemented Cadfael as a distinctly Welsh and somewhat scholarly or historical-sounding name, often associated with wisdom, resilience, and a connection to medieval times. It remains uncommon but is recognized due to its literary association.
