Brutus

Brutus is a name with deep roots in ancient Rome. It is believed to have originated as a cognomen (a third name, often a nickname) in the Roman Republic, derived from the Latin adjective 'brutus'. The most famous bearer, Lucius Junius Brutus, was a legendary figure credited with overthrowing the last king of Rome and establishing the Roman Republic. His descendants, the gens Junia, continued to use the name.

The name gained significant historical weight due to Marcus Junius Brutus, one of the assassins of Julius Caesar. This act cemented the name's association with both republican ideals and betrayal. Despite its historical prominence, the negative connotations of 'dull' or 'stupid' from its etymology, combined with the association with Caesar's assassination, have generally prevented it from becoming a widely used given name in later centuries.
