Briséïs

Briséïs is a name of ancient Greek origin, directly derived from the patronymic 'Briseis', meaning 'daughter of Briseus'. Briseus was a priest in the city of Lyrnessus. The name is most famously associated with Briseis, a central figure in Homer's epic poem, the 'Iliad'. She was a Trojan woman captured by Achilles during the Trojan War.

Her story is a poignant one, as she became a war prize for Achilles. When Agamemnon, the leader of the Achaeans, was forced to return his own war prize, Chryseis, he demanded Briseis from Achilles as compensation. This act deeply offended Achilles and led to his withdrawal from battle, a pivotal event in the 'Iliad' that had dire consequences for the Achaean forces. The name, therefore, carries strong literary and mythological connotations of beauty, captivity, and the catalyst for epic conflict.
