Bhishma

Bhishma is a central and revered character in the ancient Indian epic, the Mahabharata. His original name was Devavrata, but he earned the name Bhishma (meaning 'terrible' or 'formidable') after taking a severe vow of lifelong celibacy and renouncing his claim to the throne to ensure his father's happiness. This act of self-sacrifice is considered one of the greatest examples of dharma (righteous conduct) in Hindu mythology.

His vow allowed his father, King Shantanu, to marry the goddess Ganga, who had stipulated that she would only marry him if her children would be heirs to the throne. Bhishma's unwavering commitment to his vow and his loyalty to his family, despite the moral complexities of the Kurukshetra War, make him a figure of immense respect and tragedy. He is often depicted as an invincible warrior and a wise elder, serving as a patriarch for the Kuru dynasty.
