Belize

The origin of the name 'Belize' is debated. One prominent theory suggests it derives from a Maya word, possibly 'Balix' meaning 'muddy water' or 'Belikin' meaning 'road to the east'. Another theory posits that it is a Spanish corruption of the name of the Scottish buccaneer Peter Wallace, who established a settlement near the Belize River in the 17th century. The name was eventually applied to the river, then to the town, and finally to the entire country.

While primarily known as a geographical name, Belize has been adopted as a given name, predominantly for females, likely due to its unique sound and association with the Central American country. Its usage as a personal name is relatively modern and uncommon.
