Arafat

The name Arafat is deeply rooted in Islamic tradition and geography. It primarily refers to Mount Arafat (Jabal al-Rahmah, 'Mountain of Mercy'), a granite hill located east of Mecca in Saudi Arabia. This mountain is a crucial site in the annual Hajj pilgrimage, where pilgrims spend the afternoon of the ninth day of Dhu al-Hijjah (the 12th month of the Islamic calendar) in prayer and supplication. The 'standing on Arafat' (wuquf Arafat) is considered the most important ritual of the Hajj, without which the pilgrimage is incomplete.

The name itself is derived from the Arabic verb 'arafa' (عرف), meaning 'to know,' 'to recognize,' or 'to be acquainted with.' This etymology is often interpreted in the context of pilgrims recognizing God's mercy and their sins, or Adam and Eve recognizing each other after being cast out of Paradise.
