Alfeu / Alphaeus / Alfeo

Alfeu is the Portuguese and Galician form of the ancient Greek name Alphaeus (Ἀλφαῖος). The etymology of Alphaeus is debated, but it is often linked to the Greek word 'alphos' (ἀλφός), meaning 'white, dull, or muddy,' possibly referring to the color of the river Alpheus in Greece. Alternatively, some scholars connect it to a Semitic root, meaning 'to change' or 'to exchange,' though this is less commonly accepted for the Greek form.

The name Alphaeus appears in the New Testament as the father of two apostles: James, son of Alphaeus, and Matthew (Levi), who is also identified as the son of Alphaeus in some traditions. This biblical association contributed to its spread, particularly in Christian cultures. Over time, as languages evolved, Alphaeus transformed into various forms, with Alfeu being the specific adaptation in Portuguese and Galician-speaking regions.
