Éloi / Eligius / Eloy

The name Éloi is the French form of the Latin name Eligius, which means 'chosen' or 'elect'. It gained prominence through Saint Eligius (c. 588–660 AD), a Frankish goldsmith who became a bishop of Noyon-Tournai and an advisor to King Dagobert I. Saint Eligius is the patron saint of goldsmiths, silversmiths, coin collectors, and veterinarians, among others. His veneration in France led to the widespread use of the name Éloi.
